Wat is typisch Haags eten dat je moet proberen? Waar liggen de culinaire hotspots? Welke tentjes moet je niet voorbij lopen zonder naar binnen te gaan? Zoveel keuze in een grote stad zoals Den Haag! We hebben voor jou een gids samengesteld, waarin we jou uitleggen waar en hoe je de Haagse culinaire scene kan beleven.
Een begrip voor straatvoedsel dat onder Hagenaren al lang staat is de Dungelmann kroket. Tegenwoordig zo populair dat ze ook bij veel locaties buiten Den Haag te vinden is, mocht je voorbij Slagerij Dungelmann op de Hoogstraat lopen, mis dan niet de kans om deze lekkernij te proberen op de plek waar het ooit allemaal begon. Bij Bakkerij Hessing in de Theresiastraat vind je de Haagsche Kakker, een speciaal brood gevuld met een mengsel amandelspijs en kaneel.
Andere lekkernijen die je moet proberen zijn de Haagse Hopjes, een karamel met koffiesmaak, en de Haagse Bal, een chocoladebol gemaakt met Belgische chocolade, die bij meerdere speciaalzaken zoals VVV te vinden is en de Dudok appeltaart die je bij Café Dudok aan de Hofweg kan krijgen. Mocht je ergens koffie bestellen, vraag dan om een Haagse Ooievaartje erbij, een krokante koekje met een ooievaar erop, een alomtegenwoordig symbool dat overal in Den Haag te zien is.
Ben je voor de eerste keer in Nederland en ben je benieuwd naar de opties? Ons land staat internationaal bekend voor stroopwafels die je bij Van Schaik kan vinden, bitterballen die je bij De Haagsche Croquetterij kan proeven en friet met mayo, waar je bij Jack Snack van kan genieten.
Echter raden we jou aan om je keuze van straatvoedsel uit te breiden, bijvoorbeeld met visgerechten zoals pekelharing en kibbeling bij Simonis, frituur zoals frikandellen en kroketten of toetjes zoals tompoes en poffertjes bij Paviljoen Malieveld.
Alleen met snacken kan je natuurlijk niet de hele dag door, daarom moet je ook onze maaltijden proberen! Begin met een erwtensoep als voorgerecht bij De Posthoorn en wees zeker om een stukje roggebrood en katenspek erbij te vragen. Als hoofdgerecht, niets is meer typisch Nederlands dan stamppot, die je bij Oma Toos kan eten, echter beschouwen wij stoofvlees als de echte verborgen parel uit onze keuken, dat je bij Leopold kunt krijgen.
Wil je snel en als een echte Nederlander een hapje eten? Wees dan niet verlegen om boter met hagelslag op je brood te smeren voor ontbijt of je brood met een plakje oude kaas te beleggen voor lunch. Mocht je zin in iets warmer hebben, haal dan een tosti ham en kaas af bij Leuk.
Beperk je echter niet tot de Nederlandse keuken! De Surinaamse, Indonesische, Turkse en Marokkaanse keukens zijn al decennialang een vast onderdeel van de Nederlandse samenleving. Geniet van een heerlijke roti bij Warung Kromo, eet een authentieke nasi bij Keraton Damai of proef een kapsalon bij Maxima.
Bovendien, veel eetgelegenheden uit de internationale keuken zijn een begrip voor Hagenaren en een voorkeur voor de lokale internationale gemeenschap, dus ook iets voor jou om uit te proberen. Waar kan je dan terecht? Dat leggen we jou graag uit, voor alle maaltijden en gelegenheden van de dag!
Ontbijt
Wij kennen allemaal het gevoel! Je moet ’s ochtends vroeg met de trein naar Den Haag, van daar nog de tram pakken naar Madurodam en op tijd zijn om je te laten registreren voordat de eerste talk begint. Maar hoe scoor je snel nog een lekker ontbijt in al die haast? We hebben een handvol locaties voor jou bedacht!
John & June’s
Ben je vroeg aangekomen en heb je trek in een hapje? Bij John & June’s vind je betaalbare broodjes, tosti’s en koffie. De locatie is klein, maar je kan altijd je bestelling meenemen en onderweg opeten.
Gelegen aan de rand van het Scheveningse Bos, hoef je van tram 9 slechts één station eerder uit te stappen om bij John & June’s te zijn. Dan kan je nog even in de frisse ochtendlucht van het Scheveningse Bos uitwaaien terwijl je het laatste stukje richting Madurodam loopt.

Moon’s Kitchen
Zodra je station Den Haag HS uitloopt, kom je bij Moon’s Kitchen terecht. Ze zijn vanaf 8 uur ’s ochtends geopend en zijn dus een uitstekende optie om even te chillen voordat je de tram richting Madurodam pakt.
Hier eet je een heerlijke Shakshouka, een authentiek Marokkaanse ontbijt, en drink je een lekkere koffie of muntthee, maar je kan altijd ook een broodje bestellen om mee te nemen. De smashed avocado is echt een aanrader. Mocht je vegetariër zijn, heeft Moon’s Kitchen opties ook voor jou, zowel qua eten als melk alternatieven voor in je koffie.

Restaurant Suus
Wil je liever in een heerlijke sfeer ontbijten, zonder je zorgen te maken dat je de allereerste talk van WordCamp gaat missen? Restaurant Suus kan hier niet beter geschikt voor zijn! Al vanaf 7 uur ’s ochtends geopend en gelegen aan de andere kant van het water van Madurodam, aan de begane grond van Hotel De Plesman, je zou bijna de vuurtoren van Madurodam vanuit het raam kunnen zien, stonden bomen niet in de weg.
Met een menukaart geïnspireerd door de Franse keuken, eet je hier versgebakken croissantjes en drink je een barista-gemaakte koffie. Mocht je later niet te ver van Madurodam willen lopen, is Suus de hele dag door geopend, maar let op dat de dinerkaart niet te breed is qua opties.

Dineren
Een bekend beeld: Het programma voor de dag is voorbij en mensen komen samen, allemaal met hetzelfde idee: Zullen we ergens gaan eten? Maar waar doe je dat als je al moe bent en niet te ver wilt reizen? We hebben wel een aantal opties voor jou in de buurt!
LEO’s International Flavors
Wil je graag heerlijk dineren met een grotere groep na een volle dag bij WordCamp? Op slechts een kwartiertje lopen van Madurodam vind je LEO’s International Flavors op de begane grond van het Leonardo Royal Hotel Den Haag Promenade.
Met een royale keuze van gerechten uit de internationale keuken, vind je zeker op de menukaart iets naar iedere smaak. Nog een borrel na een flinke maaltijd? Dat kan bij de hoge tafels tot laat in de avond. Vergeet alleen niet van tevoren te reserveren, want het hotel was afgelopen jaar de verblijfskeuze van veel WordCamp bezoekers.

Giuliano’s
Met 2 locaties naast elkaar, heb je bij Giuliano’s een ruime keuze van pasta, pizza en andere Italiaanse gerechten. Al decennia geleden als trotse familiebedrijf opgericht, hier vind je authentieke Italiaanse streekproducten die op traditionele manier worden bereid.
Lekker dineren kan niet betaalbaarder dan bij Giuliano’s! Voor minder dan 20 euro eet je een hoofdgerecht en voor minder dan 10 euro drink je een Aperol Spritz. Let echter op dat een van de locaties gespecialiseerd is in pasta, terwijl de andere in pizza, dus geef alvast een kijkje op de menukaart voordat je aan tafel gaat zitten.

Seoul Garden
Mocht je zin in een bijzondere culinaire ervaring hebben, dan moet je bij Seoul Garden zijn. Met een rustieke sfeer en in eigendom van een Koreaanse familie, beleef je hier de authentieke Koreaanse keuken.
Nederlanders komen vaak vanuit alle hoeken van het land alleen om bij Seoul Garden te eten, dus aangezien je toch in Den Haag bent is het misschien een bezoekje waard. Als je nog nooit Korean BBQ hebt geproefd, moeten we je wel waarschuwen dat je hier je steak zelf moet grillen.

Borrelen
Geen conferentie zonder een naborrel! Niets is leuker na een dag vol met inspirerende talks, dan met de nieuwe mensen die je hebt leren kennen, gezellig te ontspannen terwijl jullie nieuwe ideeën over gemeenschappelijke interesses delen. Maar waar doe je dat?
Brasserie Amare
Gelegen in hartje Den Haag op de begane grond van de concertzaal Amare, was deze brasserie niet voor niets het afgelopen jaar de locatiekeuze voor een officiële WordCamp naborrel. Terwijl de cocktails het hoogtepunt van de drankjeskaart zijn, vind je hier ook een heerlijk bier op tap. Toch trek in een burger? Op de menukaart heb je ook een ruime selectie van eten!
Moet je nog snel naar de trein zodra jouw glas op is? De brasserie bevindt zich op slechts 10 minuutjes loopafstand van station Den Haag Centraal en een kwartiertje lopen van station Den Haag HS.

Van Kinsbergen
Met een gezellige sfeer die meer aan een Engelse pub doet denken dan een Nederlandse café, is Van Kinsbergen dé plek voor speciaalbier in Den Haag. Je vindt hier een brede keuze van zowel Nederlandse als internationale bietjes op tap, samen met hun eigen huisbier.
Zin in iets sterkers? Op de drankenkaart staat ook een ruime selectie van gedistilleerde drankjes en cocktails. Mocht de honger toeslaan, dan hoef je niet van locatie te wisselen, want op de menukaart vind je alles van volle maaltijden tot borrelhapjes en toetjes.

De Oude Mol
Wat kan nog meer bijdragen aan een gezellige sfeer als je al in een bruine kroeg zit, in goed gezelschap en met een koud glas bier? Live muziek natuurlijk! Als een van de oudste cafés in de stad, is De Oude Mol en begrip onder Hagenaren als een toevluchtsoord voor lokale artiesten.
Terwijl je hier heerlijk kunt borrelen, zijn de wekelijks wisselende speciale gerechten de verborgen parel van deze locatie. Mocht je Juut, de eigenares van het café tegenkomen, wees zeker om haar te bedanken voor de dienst die ze al jarenlang voor de Haagse samenleving doet.

Ga op ontdekkingstocht!
Een stad verkennen moet je nooit op een lege maag doen, maar wat als geen van de door ons aanbevolen tentjes naar jouw smaak is? Gelukkig is Den Haag goed bezorgd met een handvol hotspots, zodat je niet te ver hoeft te lopen om je favoriete restaurant te vinden.
Denneweg
Langs het spoor van tram 9, halfweg tussen Madurodam en Den Haag HS, liggen de Denneweg en diens verlengingen de Vos in Tuinstraat en de Frederikstraat. Hier vind je restaurantjes en cafeetjes met gerechten uit zowel de Nederlandse als de internationale keuken.
Bij Café 2005 eet je betaalbaar Indonesisch in de vertrouwde sfeer van een bruine kroeg en bij De Landman eet je een heerlijke chocoladetaart. Bij Limón bestel je Spaanse tapas terwijl bij de buren bij La Tabla je een Argentijnse steak kunt eten. Bij La Bruschetta eet je verse huisgemaakte pasta en pizza en bij Walter Benedict geniet je van een Frans toetje dat je dan bij de nabijgelegen Bouzy met een glaasje wijn wegspoelt.
Bierkade
De Bierkade en diens verlengingen de Dunne Bierkade en de Zuidwal, samen met het Groenewegje, de zusterkade gelegen aan de andere kant van de Zuid-Singelsgracht, staan bekend onder Hagenaren als Avenue Culinaire. Deze mooie gracht is niet alleen prachtig voor een avondwandeling, maar ook bekleed met talloze restaurantjes en cafeetjes.
Deel een tapasplank bij De Pakschuit, eet een broodje bij De Kade of drink een speciaalbier bij De Paas of De Bordelaise. Maar wij willen jou liever niet verder leiden en moedigen je aan om zelf jouw favoriete tents te vinden. Als we jou nog één tip mogen geven, wees niet verlegen om ook de zijstraatjes te gaan verkennen! Toch niet gevonden waar je op zoek naar was? Op korte loopafstand liggen Plein en de Grote Markt met restaurants en cafés waar je zeker een pand kan vinden dat jou aanspreekt.
Foodhall
Bekend als een badplaats en zomerbestemming, je had waarschijnlijk niet verwacht om Scheveningen eind november te bezoeken. Toch is het de extra afstand waard om de hier gevestigde Foodhall te proberen.
Typisch voor een eetplein, vind je hier een selectie van straatvoedsel uit de internationale keuken. Of je trek hebt in een surinaamse roti, een kom Vietnamese noedels of een griekse gyros, er is bij de Foodhall zeker een restaurant naar jouw smaak. Mocht je hier willen borrelen, vind je in het midden van de hal een bar met verschillende drankselecties en dichtbij een bitterballentent.
Waarom geen lunchopties?
Bij WordCamp krijg je van ons op allebei de dagen een inbegrepen lunch en onbeperkt koffie. De lunchpauze begint om 12:30 en duurt tot 13:45. We raden je aan om op tijd te zijn om minder te hoeven wachten, want de kans is groot dat er zich wachtrijen gaan vormen. Blijf je een extra dagje in Den Haag en moet je toch ergens lunchen? Veel van de door ons aangeraden locaties hebben ook heerlijke lunchopties. Geef dus hun menukaartjes een kijkje!

There are so many choices in a big city like The Hague! We’ve put together a guide for you, explaining where and how you can experience The Hague’s culinary scene.
One street food item that has long been a staple among The Hague locals is the Dungelmann croquette. It’s so popular now that it can be found at many locations outside The Hague, but if you happen to walk past Butcher Dungelmann on the Hoogstraat, don’t miss the chance to try this delicacy at the place where it all began. At Bakery Hessing on Theresiastraat, you’ll find the ‘Haagsche Kakker’, a special bread filled with a mixture of almond paste and cinnamon.
Other delicacies you should try are the ‘Haagse Hopjes’, a caramel with a coffee flavor, and the ‘Haagse Bal’, a chocolate ball made with Belgian chocolate, which can be found at several specialty shops like VVV and the ‘Dudok’ apple pie, which you can get at Café Dudok on Hofweg. If you order coffee somewhere, ask for a ‘Haagse Ooievaartje’ with it, a crispy cookie with a stork drawing, a ubiquitous symbol seen everywhere in The Hague.
Is this your first time in the Netherlands and are you curious about the options? Our country is internationally known for ‘stroopwafels’ (syrup filled waffles) which you can find at Van Schaik, ‘bitterballen’ (deep fried meat balls) which you can taste at De Haagsche Croquetterij and fries with mayonnaise, which you can enjoy at Jack Snack.
However, we recommend you expand your street food choices, for example, with fish dishes like ‘pekelharing’ (pickled herring) and ‘kibbeling’ (battered fish pieces) at Simonis, fried snacks like ‘frikandellen’ and croquettes or desserts like ’tompoes’ and ‘poffertjes’ at Paviljoen Malieveld.
You can’t get through the whole day just with snacks, which is why you also have to try our meals! Start with a ‘erwtensoep’ (pea soup) as a starter at De Posthoorn and be sure to ask for a piece of ‘roggebrood’ (rye bread) and ‘katenspek’ (bacon) with it. For the main course, nothing is more typically Dutch than ‘stamppot’ (mashed potatoes with kale), which you can eat at Oma Toos, but we consider ‘stoofvlees’ (slowly simmered beef stew) as the real hidden gem of our cuisine, which you can get at Leopold.
Do you want to eat a quick bite like a real Dutchman? Don’t shy away from spreading butter with ‘hagelslag’ (chocolate sprinkles) on your bread for breakfast or topping your bread with a slice of old cheese for lunch. If you’re in the mood for something warmer, grab a ham and cheese ’tosti’ (grilled sandwich) at Leuk.
However, don’t limit yourself to Dutch cuisine! The Surinamese, Indonesian, Turkish and Moroccan cuisines have been a fixed part of Dutch community for decades. Enjoy a delicious ‘roti’ at Warung Kromo, eat an authentic ‘nasi’ (Indonesian noodles) at Keraton Damai or taste a ‘kapsalon’ (Dutch kebab) at Maxima.
Moreover, many restaurants specialized in the international cuisine are a household name among The Hague locals and a preference for the local international community, so also something for you to try out. Where should you go then? Here are our recommendations, for all occasions of the day!
Breakfast
We all know the feeling! You have to take the train to The Hague early in the morning, then from the station take the tram to Madurodam and be on time to register before the first talk begins. But how do you quickly grab a tasty breakfast in all that rush? We’ve come up with a handful of locations for you!
John & June’s
Did you arrive early and feel like having a bite to eat? At John & June’s you’ll find affordable cold or grilled sandwiches and coffee. The location is small, but you can always order takeaway and eat it on the way.
Located on the edge of the Scheveningen Forest, you only have to get off one stop earlier on tram 9 to be at John & June’s. Then you can get some fresh air in the Scheveningen Forest while you walk the last part towards Madurodam.

Moon’s Kitchen
As soon as you walk out of Den Haag HS station, you’ll find Moon’s Kitchen. They are open from 8 o’clock in the morning and are therefore an excellent option to chill out for a while before you take the tram towards Madurodam.
Here you can eat a delicious ‘Shakshouka’, an authentic Moroccan breakfast, and drink a nice coffee or mint tea, but you can always order a sandwich to go. We highly recommend the smashed avocado. If you are a vegetarian, Moon’s Kitchen also has options for you, both in terms of food and milk alternatives for your coffee.

Restaurant Suus
Would you prefer to have breakfast in a wonderful atmosphere, without worrying that you’re going to miss the very first WordCamp talk? Restaurant Suus couldn’t be better suited for this! Opened from 7 o’clock in the morning and located on the other side of the water from Madurodam, on the ground floor of Hotel De Plesman, you could almost see the lighthouse of Madurodam from the window, if trees weren’t in the way.
With a menu inspired by the French cuisine, you can eat freshly baked croissants here and drink a barista-made coffee. If you don’t want to walk too far from Madurodam later, Suus is open all day, but keep in mind that the dinner menu is not too broad in terms of options.

LEO’s International Flavors
Would you like to have a delicious dinner with a larger group after a full day at WordCamp? Just a fifteen-minute walk from Madurodam you’ll find LEO’s International Flavors on the ground floor of the Leonardo Royal Hotel The Hague Promenade.
With a generous choice of dishes from the international cuisine, you’ll surely find something on the menu to suit everyone’s taste. Should you be the mood for another drink after you have finished meal, you can hang out at the high tables until late in the evening. Just don’t forget to make a reservation in advance, because the hotel was the accommodation of choice for many WordCamp visitors last year.

Giuliano’s
With 2 locations next to each other, you have a wide choice of pasta, pizza and other Italian dishes at Giuliano’s. Founded as a proud family business decades ago, here you will find authentic Italian regional products that are prepared in a traditional way.
Delicious dining can’t be more affordable than at Giuliano’s! For less than 20 euros you can eat a main course and for less than 10 euros you can drink an Aperol Spritz. However, keep in mind that one of the locations specializes in pasta, while the other in pizza, so make sure to take a look at the menu before you sit down at the table.

Seoul Garden
If you feel like having a special culinary experience, you should go to Seoul Garden. With a rustic atmosphere and owned by a Korean family, you’ll be experiencing the authentic Korean cuisine here.
Dutch people often come from all corners of the country just to eat at Seoul Garden, so since you’re in The Hague anyway, it might be worth a visit. If you’ve never had Korean BBQ before, we should warn you that you have to grill your own steak here.

No conference without an afterparty! Nothing is more fun after a day full of inspiring talks than relaxing with the new people you’ve met while sharing new ideas about common interests. But where do you do that?
Brasserie Amare
Located in the heart of The Hague on the ground floor of the Amare concert hall, this diner was the location of choice for an official WordCamp afterparty last year for a reason. While the cocktails are the highlight of the drinks menu, you’ll also find a delicious beer on tap here. Still craving a burger? The menu also has a wide selection of food!
Do you need to quickly get to the train as soon as your glass is empty? Brasserie Amare is just a 10-minute walk from The Hague Central station and a fifteen-minute walk from The Hague HS station.

Van Kinsbergen
With a cozy atmosphere that is more reminiscent of an English pub than a Dutch café, Van Kinsbergen is the place for specialty beer in The Hague. Here you will find a wide choice of both Dutch and international beers on tap, together with their own house beer.
In the mood for something stronger? The drinks menu also has a wide selection of spirits and cocktails. If hunger strikes, you don’t have to change locations, because the menu has everything from full meals to snacks and desserts.

De Oude Mol
What can contribute even more to a cozy atmosphere when you’re already in a ‘brown cafe’, in good company and with a cold glass of beer? Live music, of course! As one of the oldest cafes in the city, De Oude Mol is a household name among The Hague locals as a haven for local artists.
While you can stop here just for drinks, the weekly changing special dishes are the hidden gem of this location. If you happen to meet Juut, the owner of the cafe, be sure to thank her for the service she has been doing for The Hague community for years.

Go on a journey of discovery!
You should never explore a city on an empty stomach, but what if none of the places we recommended are to your taste? Fortunately, The Hague is well-supplied with a handful of hotspots, so you don’t have to walk too far to find your favorite restaurant.
Denneweg
Along the track of tram 9, halfway between Madurodam and The Hague HS, are the Denneweg and its extensions the Vos in Tuinstraat and the Frederikstraat. Here you’ll find restaurants and cafes with dishes from both Dutch and international cuisine.
At Café 2005 you can eat affordable Indonesian food in the familiar atmosphere of a ‘brown cafe’ and at De Landman you can eat a delicious chocolate cake. At Limón you can order Spanish tapas while at the neighbors at La Tabla you can eat an Argentine steak. At La Bruschetta you can eat fresh homemade pasta and pizza and at Walter Benedict you can enjoy a French dessert that you can then wash down with a glass of wine at the nearby Bouzy.
Bierkade
The Bierkade and its extensions the Dunne Bierkade and the Zuidwal, together with the Groenewegje, the sister quay located on the other side of the Zuid-Singelsgracht, are known among The Hague locals as Avenue Culinaire. This beautiful canal is not only great for an evening walk, but also lined with countless restaurants and cafes.
Share a tapas board at De Pakschuit, eat a sandwich at De Kade or drink a specialty beer at De Paas or De Bordelaise. But we would rather not lead you any further and encourage you to find your own favorite places. If we can give you one more tip, don’t shy away from exploring the side streets too! Still haven’t found what you’re looking for? Within a short walking distance are Plein and the Grote Markt with restaurants and cafes where you are sure to find a place that appeals to you.
Foodhall
Known as a seaside resort and summer destination, you probably didn’t expect to visit Scheveningen at the end of November. Nevertheless, it’s worth the extra distance to try the Foodhall located here.
Typical of a food court, here you’ll find a selection of street food from the international cuisine. Whether you’re craving a Surinamese roti, a bowl of Vietnamese noodles or a Greek gyros, there’s definitely a restaurant to your taste at the Foodhall. If you want to have a drink here, in the middle of the hall you will find a bar with various drink selections and a ‘bitterballen’ place nearby.
Why no lunch options?
At WordCamp, you get a complimentary lunch and unlimited coffee on both days. The lunch break starts at 12:30 PM and lasts until 1:45 PM. We advise you to be on time to avoid having to wait, as it’s likely that queues will form. Are you staying an extra day in The Hague and still need to have lunch somewhere? Many of the locations we recommended also have delicious lunch options. Make sure to take a look at their menus!
