Code of Conduct
1. Purpose
WordCamp Netherlands believes our community should be truly open for everyone.
We are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, age, caste, social class, preferred operating system, programming language, or text editor, among other personal identifiers.
This Code of Conduct outlines our expectations for participant behavior, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.
We invite all sponsors, volunteers, speakers, attendees, and other participants to help us ensure a safe and positive conference experience for everyone.
2. Open Source Citizenship
Another goal of this Code of Conduct is to promote open source citizenship by encouraging participants to recognize and strengthen the relationships between what we do and the broader community.
To support this, the organizers of WordCamp Netherlands will accept nominations during the event for exemplary community members, and selected individuals will be recognized on the website after the event.
If you see someone going above and beyond to make our community welcoming and inclusive, and encouraging others to contribute fully, we want to hear about it.
3. Expected Behavior
- Be considerate, respectful, and collaborative.
- Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech.
- Be mindful of your surroundings and fellow participants. Alert the conference organizers if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress.
- Participate in an authentic and active way. In doing so, you help make WordCamp Netherlands your own event.
4. Unacceptable Behavior
Unacceptable behavior includes: intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, demeaning, or derogatory conduct by any participants at WordCamp Netherlands and related events.
All venues may be shared with members of the public; please be respectful to all patrons of these spaces.
Harassment includes:
- Unwelcome sexual attention
- Offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability
- Inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces (including presentation slides)
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
- Harassing photography or recording
- Sustained disruption of talks or other events
- Inappropriate physical contact
5. Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior
Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated, whether by attendees, organizers, venue staff, sponsors, or other guests at WordCamp Netherlands venues.
Anyone asked to stop any unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.
If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from the conference without warning or refund.
6. What to Do If You Witness or Are Subject to Unacceptable Behavior
If you are subjected to unacceptable behavior, notice someone else being subjected to it, or have any other concerns, please notify a conference organizer as soon as possible.
The WordCamp Netherlands team will be available to help participants contact venue security or local law enforcement, provide guidance, or assist in any way to ensure participants feel safe during the event.
Volunteers will be identifiable by their unique WCNL24 t-shirts. Any volunteer can connect you with a conference organizer.
You can also visit the registration desk in the lobby and ask to speak with an organizer.
7. Scope
We expect all conference participants (sponsors, volunteers, speakers, attendees, and guests) to abide by this Code of Conduct at all conference venues and conference-related social events.
8. Contact information

Statement on Social or Supplementary Events (where applicable)
Social and supplementary events are intended to offer networking opportunities, additional learning experiences, and a chance to unwind after a full day of WordCamp.
They should also be safe and inclusive spaces for all participants.
We want you to enjoy these events — and we want you to do so safely.
If you experience or witness a violation of the Code of Conduct, have concerns about someone’s wellbeing, safety, or behavior, or just have a general question (we know violations aren’t always clear-cut!), please reach out immediately by notifying a WordCamp organizer or emailing hallo@wordcamp.nl.
For in-person events, if you need help or are unable to safely remove yourself from a situation you don’t want to be in, organizers will prioritize helping you discreetly and immediately.
Examples include:
- Not feeling well
- Missing transportation
- Being intoxicated
- Being alone or with someone you don’t trust
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Experiencing or witnessing a Code of Conduct violation
- Ask a nearby volunteer or organizer for help.
